Firework lighters - which lighter is right for you?

Datum geplaatst: 1 October 2026

Looking for a lighter for fireworks? Consider more than appearance: check the controls, the distance between your hand and the flame, and whether the lighter can be refilled. A powerful flame is not automatically the best choice for every use.

What types of lighter are there?

You will encounter several names. A torch lighter or jet-flame lighter produces a focused flame. The term storm lighter is often used for models that are more resistant to wind. These descriptions overlap, so always check the features of the specific model.

A long-reach lighter has an extended neck, keeping your hand further from the ignition point. Check the product information and instructions to establish whether a lighter is suitable for your intended use.

What should you consider when choosing?

  • Controls: does the lighter fit comfortably in your hand, and can you operate it with control?
  • Distance: how far does your hand remain from the ignition point?
  • Refilling: is the model refillable, and which gas does the manufacturer specify?
  • Flame adjustment: can you adjust the flame, and how?
  • Instructions: are the filling, use and storage instructions clear?

Is a storm lighter completely windproof?

Do not assume so. A focused flame may withstand wind better, but performance varies by model and conditions. Terms such as “windproof” are no substitute for clear product specifications.

Only use a lighter in conditions where you can operate it safely.

Maintaining a refillable lighter

Use only the specified gas and a suitable filling nozzle. Let the lighter cool before refilling and follow the filling method and waiting time in its instructions.

Stop using a lighter that leaks, is damaged or works irregularly. Contact the seller if in doubt.

Using a lighter for fireworks carefully

Always follow the ignition method specified for the firework. A lighter does not replace a lighting taper when the instructions require one.

Keep your body away from the item, respect the safety distance and never try to relight a firework that has failed. Keep lighters out of children’s reach and protect them from heat.
