Fireworks rules in the Netherlands

A nationwide consumer-fireworks ban has applied in the Netherlands since 1 August 2026. The former sales days and permitted hours for setting off consumer fireworks therefore no longer apply. Consumers may not buy, possess or set off fireworks in categories F2, F3 or F4.

Which fireworks remain permitted?

Category F1 remains permitted. It includes light articles presenting a very low hazard, such as sparklers, throwdowns, party poppers and certain small fountains. Always check the category on the packaging and follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety distance. F1 can generally be used throughout the year, although municipalities may impose additional local restrictions.

Displays and local exemptions

Professional operators may provide displays with the required permits. For New Year's Eve, a mayor may also grant an exemption, subject to conditions, to a locally connected foundation or association. Such an exemption does not give individual consumers general permission to set off fireworks.

Buying abroad

Legal sale of F2 or F3 in Germany or Belgium does not allow a Dutch consumer to bring it into the Netherlands. Dutch rules on purchase, import, possession and use still apply. Check current information from the Dutch government and the relevant municipality.
